I was born in King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape and went to school in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). In 2003, I received my BSc in physics and philosophy at UCT. In 2004, I acquired my BSc Honours (first class) in theoretical physics. During 2007-2009, I completed my MSc (summa cum laude) at UKZN in quantum cryptography. Since 2010, I have been working towards my PhD at UKZN in quantum biology. I spent a year of my PhD as a visiting researcher at the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore. I submitted my thesis this November 2014, entitled “Quantum effects in photosynthesis”.
